October Message from Greg Johnson and Elise Colomer

Dear Friends, Fellow Family Caregivers, and Readers,

It is such a joy to introduce Elise, a dear friend and colleague in FAMILY CAREGIVING. As a senior and Gay Elder words fail me to THANK SAGE for all it has done, is doing and continues to do for the LGBT world – a world made up of many, many family caregivers.

It was our LGBT world that gave us the now universally accepted term: FAMILIES OF CHOICE and we are grateful. This term applies to all, not just the LGBT world for each of us families…church, synagogue, other Houses of Worship, senior centers, apartment houses, residences, social clubs, etc, etc, etc…each a FAMILY OF CHOICE…for we chose to belong and we treasure our brothers and sisters also involved.

WE ARE FAMILY..INDEED…thank you, Elise and thank you, SAGE for making the world so much better.

Thank you, Greg. Services & Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE) has been working with, and on behalf of LGBT older adults since 1977. Our mission has always been to work towards improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older adults, and those who love and care for them. Our partnership with NYC Partnership for Family Caregiver Corps is all the more meaningful as we work with others who share our vision that everyone will at some point in our lives be touched by caregiving.

SAGE works to support LGBT older adults nationwide by providing direct support, as well as training and educating others on the challenges they, and those who care for them, face. In the past year, SAGE has trained the staff of Jewish Home Lifecare, Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Program and soon, the entire staff at The Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale on these issues. Additionally, we have partnered with the National Office of the Alzheimer’s Association in Chicago to provide LGBT cultural competency information to all 80 of their chapters. Our goal in providing this type of training and information is to ensure that LGBT older adults and their caregivers receive affirming and safe services.
With thanks,
Elise Colomer, Corporate and Foundation Relations Officer, SAGE
